The
Swami got back on track in the second edition of Trail Trash for 2005 with a
46-14 win/loss record. The Swami correctly picked thirteen of the sixteen
regional champions missing only on Columbus Linden McKinley, Loudonville, and
Cleveland Heights Lutheran East. The Swami also predicted three of the four
state champions losing out on Canton McKinley.
The Associated Press pollsters finally got it right this time around as all four
state champions were the top-ranked teams in their final poll. This is the
first time that has ever happened. In fact, only twenty-seven poll winners had
gone on to win state championships prior to this season.
Enrollment figures to be used to determine classifications for the next two
years were recently published by the OHSAA. With the tournament completed, we
will be looking at the cutoffs for next season. We expect several Northwest
Ohio teams will be moving into different divisions next season.
This is our final update for the 2004/2005 season. We would like to thank
everyone for all the compliments and support. We will see you next season.

The
Swami was off the mark on his Trail Trash sectional picks with a very
mediocre 79-31 (72%) win/loss record. The Swami will really need to pick up the
pace this week if he is to come anywhere near last season's record. The Swami
picked only 34 sectional champs and has already had one of his predicted
district champions (Elida) eliminated. It was definitely a week to go with the
top seeds and forget about upsets as forty-four of the fifty-two sectional
champions in NW Ohio were either top seeded or second seeded teams. The eight
teams that were not one of the top two seeds in their sectionals but went on to
win titles were Findlay (D1); Liberty Benton and Western Reserve (D3); and
Hardin-Northern, Fort Jennings, Cardinal Stritch, Stryker, and Mohawk (D4).
As we've written in recent weeks, there are several Northeast Ohio districts
which will have their winners advance to Northwest Ohio for the regional. Here
are those Northeast Ohio districts and the teams that have advanced to the
district.
Berea (D1): Solon, Midpark, Strongsville, Cleveland St. Ignatius
Grafton (D2): Lakewood St. Edward's, Lorain Southview, Elyria, Olmsted Falls
Olmsted Falls (D2): Parma Heights Holy Name, Keystone, Parma Padua, Bay Village
Barberton (D2): Akron SVSM, Akron Buchtel, Akron Hoban, Medina Highland
Elyria (D3): Rocky River Lutheran West, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy,
Wellington, Lorain Clearview
The winner of the Wapakoneta district in D4 advances to the regional in Dayton
to be joined by the three Dayton district winners. The Dayton D4 district
finals are already set and consist of Cedarville vs. Sidney Lehman; Russia vs.
Lockland; and St. Bernard-Elmwood Place vs. Ansonia. The Wapak district winner
will play the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place/Ansonia winner in a regional semi-final.
The winner of the Willard district in D4 advances to the regional in Columbus to
be joined by the Columbus district winner and the two Athens district winners.
Columbus Africentric, Lancaster Fisher, Columbus Wellington School, and
Fairbanks have advanced to the Columbus district. The district finals have
already been set in Athens with Reedsville Eastern playing Mowrystown Whiteoak
and South Webster meeting Portsmouth Clay. The Willard district winner and the
Portsmouth Clay/South Webster winner will meet in a regional semi-final in
Columbus.
There will be no update next week as we will be busy working on the second
edition of Trail Trash for 2005.

champions from around Northwest Ohio for the '04-'05 season:

Putnam County League: Continental
Sandusky Bay Conference: Huron
Suburban Lakes League: Elmwood, Woodmore
Toledo Area Athletic Conference: Danbury
Toledo City League: Toledo St. John's
Western Buckeye League: St. Marys Memorial
Tournament Update: D2 district winners from Ashland and Bowling Green will be
joined by district winners from Olmsted Falls and Barberton for the Toledo
regional. The Ashland and BG winners will play in a regional semi-final at UT
while the Olmsted Falls and Barberton winners will play their semi-final at
Canton. The regional final is scheduled for Saturday, March 12 at UT. The
Olmsted Falls district is weak while the Barberton district is again very
strong. Oberlin Firelands has the top seed at Olmsted Falls with Keystone,
Rocky River, and Bay Village the other seeded teams. The Barberton district has
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Akron Buchtel as the top two seeds followed by
Akron Hoban and Highland. Akron Central-Hower is another traditional power
playing in the Barberton district. SVSM and Buchtel are ranked right behind
Upper Sandusky in the final AP poll. Buchtel recently beat SVSM. Barring a
huge upset, look for the Barberton district winner to play in the regional final
at UT.
In D3, district winners from Ohio Northern, Toledo Waite, and Ontario will be
joined for the regional at BGSU by the Elyria district winner. Undefeated Rocky
River Lutheran West is the top seed at Elyria with defending district champ
Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Oberlin, and Wellington the other seeds.
Lutheran West is led by 6'9' Richard Semrau, one of the top juniors in the
state. Despite Lutheran West's record, CVCA is seen as the team to beat at
Elyria by many of the NE Ohio experts.

tournament.
With Upper Sandusky having beaten Willard Saturday, this week's "game of the
century" features Toledo Scott and Toledo Savage this Friday (1/21) at 7:30 pm
at the University of Toledo. Scott is currently undefeated while St. John's has
only lost to Canton McKinley at Canton. The game was originally scheduled for
St. John's, but all published schedules indicate it was to be played at the
Waite Field House. With a large crowd anticipated, the decision to move the
game to UT was made last week. Other top games this week featuring NW Ohio
teams include:

2005: Bad
weather really took a toll on this week's schedule with a number of Friday and
Saturday games being postponed. The "game of the century" between Willard and
Upper Sandusky was one of the weathered out games. The teams will make it up
this Saturday (1/15) at Upper. We are still looking for new dates for a number
of games. Contact Davey1 if you can help us out.
Last week, we started talking about the OHSAA tournament, and we continue this
week. Regional games in Northwest Ohio will be played at the University of
Toledo (Divisions 1 & 2) and at Bowling Green State University (Divisions 3 &
4). In D1, district winners from Ohio Northern and U.T. will be joined by the
Grafton Midview and Brecksville-Broadview Heights winners from Northeast Ohio.
In D2, the B.G. and Ashland University district winners will be joined by the
Olmsted Falls and Barberton district champs from Northeast Ohio. In D3,
district winners from Ohio Northern, Toledo Waite, and Ontario will be joined by
the Elyria district champ from Northeast Ohio. In D4, district winners from
Elida, Liberty-Benton, Napoleon, and Fostoria will advance to B.G. The
Wapakoneta district winner goes to the University of Dayton while the Willard
district champ advances to the Columbus Fairgrounds.

2005: With the
new year rolling around, it's time to start talking about the tournament. With
the early Easter holiday, the tournament schedule has been moved up a week with
Northwest Ohio sectional play beginning February 22.
There are very few changes as far as tournament venues are concerned. In
sectional play, the new gym at Lima Senior will host the D2 sectional after a
one-year stay at Ohio Northern. Also in D2, the sectional formerly held at
Perrysburg has been moved to Springfield. At the district level, the D1 final
traditionally played at BGSU has been moved to ONU. The D1 district final at
the University of Toledo will be played on a Sunday afternoon rather than a
Saturday night. All other sites remain the same as last season.
The OHSAA is using the same enrollment figures as a year ago so teams remain in
their same divisions for the '05 tournament. In D2, Vermilion has been moved to
the Northeast District (they previously played in the sectional at Sandusky).
With the Sailors leaving the district, Fostoria has been shifted to the Sandusky
sectional with Paulding going to the Springfield sectional. Stay tuned for more
tournament information.
