The Swami Weekly Ratings

For the past ten years, Trail Trash has been published twice annually in conjunction with the state boys basketball tournament.  In addition to tournament brackets, Trail Trash has included the expert predictions of the Swami.  For those of you familiar with the Swami, we say no more.  For the small number of you not familiar with the Swami, he is the self-proclaimed guru on Northwest Ohio high school hoops.  This website will feature the Swami's weekly ratings by division for Northwest Ohio boys high school basketball.  If that gets too boring, we'll try to come up with something else.

Any comments, questions, or corrections can be directed to swamisig@aol.com or
Davey1.  We are always in need of current records and league standings for all NW Ohio teams.

The top teams remain the same in all four divisions this week.  There was quite a bit of shuffling in both D3 and D4.  Arlington needs a win over Lima Temple Christian this Friday to finish the regular season at 20-0.

Jamar Butler scored 53 against Greenville on Saturday to set a new single game scoring record for the Indians.  The previous mark was 52 by the late Dan Perry in 1969.  The game was tied at 35 at the end of the half, but Shawnee scored 72 in the second half to win by 39 over 2-18 Greenville.  Butler scored 46 on Friday while playing the majority of the game as Shawnee blew out 0-19 Kenton.

Lima Senior will play their final game at the old Lima Senior gym this Saturday against Akron Central-Hower.  This is the forty-ninth year for the Senior High gym which also served as the home court for Lima Central Catholic for a number of years.  Mansfield Senior played their final game at Pete Henry Gymnasium on Friday as the Tygers defeated Wooster.  Both Lima and Mansfield will move into new schools next year.  Elmwood will play their first game in their new gym this Friday when the Royals host Otsego.

Tournament update:  The winner of the Elyria district will join the three NW Ohio district winners for this year's D3 regional tournament at BGSU.  State-ranked Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy appears to be the class of the field at Elyria.  Located in Cuyahoga Falls, CVCA knocked off #4 Akron Manchester this past Friday.  Brooklyn, Lutheran West, and Lorain Clearview received the other seeds at Elyria.

Toledo St. John's moves to the top spot in D1 following Lima Senior's loss to Toledo Scott.  The Spartans bounced back with a win over Mansfield Senior on Saturday.  Liberty-Benton moved into the top in D3 with Archbold, St. Henry, and Lima Central Catholic all losing on Saturday night.  Ottawa-Glandorf tightened its grip on the top spot in D2 after beating Shawnee and Perrysburg on the road.  In D4, Arlington remains undefeated after demolishing Arcadia.

Tragic News: Ricky Matter, a member of the Bluffton varsity basketball team, was fatally injured in an automobile accident Saturday afternoon,  Matter, a freshman, led the Bluffton football team to the state playoffs this season starting at quarterback.  Our sympathies go out to the Matter family.

Tournament update: The winners from the Barberton and Stow districts  will join the Bowling Green and Ashland district winners for the 2004 D2 regional tournament at the University of Toledo.  The Barberton district is very strong with Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Akron Buchtel, and Akron Central-Hower the heavy favorites.  All three are state-ranked.  The Stow district features top-ranked LaGrange Keystone.  Ravenna Southeast, Tallmadege, and Stow Walsh Jesuit also appear to have a shot.  We'll have more on Keystone in two weeks.

Key games in NW Ohio this week include:

Since the results of Sunday's tournament draws are starting to come in, we will be brief this week.  Work on Trail Trash will begin shortly, and we should have a finished product by President's Day.  In addition to being a week early, there has been another change in the tournament draw this season.  All teams at each site are being seeded rather than just the top two.  Once seeded, teams will have the choice of where to go on the brackets with the top seed having first choice followed by the second seed, the third seed, etc.  Teams also have the choice of passing.  As was the case with the "pill" process used in the past, the top two seeds may not go into the same bracket.

There are a number of top games this week including:
Lima Senior @ Toledo Scott (2/10)
Shelby @ Fostoria (2/10)
Norwalk @ Willard (2/10)
Sylvania Southview @ Perrysburg (2/13)
Ottawa-Glandorf @ Shawnee (2/13)
St. Marys Memorial @ Elida (2/13)
Minster @ New Bremen (2/13)
St. Henry @ Van Wert (2/14)

Mansfield Senior @ Lima Senior (2/14)
Lima Central Catholic @ Celina (2/14)
Patrick Henry @ Holgate (2/14)
Fostoria @ Norwalk (2/14)

No changes at the top in any of the divisions in this week's top ten, but a lot of shuffling of the other spots.

Despite a number of games being postponed due to the rotten weather, there was some movement in this week's ratings.  Lima Senior, Ottawa-Glandorf, Archbold, and Arlington all made it through the week unblemished and retain their top spots.  Ottawa-Glandorf won another WBL squeaker at home and another opposing coach was none too happy about the officiating.  Look for Wauseon's undefeated streak to be snapped this Friday at Archbold.  Arlington looks like a team ready to be upset, but the Red Devils have a very favorable schedule the rest of the way with just one game on the road.

Tournament Update: The D1 regional tournament at the University of Toledo will again bring the Northeast Ohio district winners from Grafton and Berea to join the Toledo and BG district winners.  Lakewood St. Edward and Cleveland St. Ignatius typically represent the NE district, and that certainly is a strong possibility for '04.  Olmsted Falls appears to be the major competition for Ed's at Grafton with Lorain Southview and Elyria also in the mix.  Iggy is under .500 to date, but the Wildcats always seem to make it out of the district.  Cleveland Rhodes, Midpark, North Royalton, and Strongsville are other contenders at Berea.

Top games this week include:
Ottawa-Glandorf @ Lima Central Catholic (2/3)
Wauseon @ Archbold (2/6)
Toledo Scott vs. Toledo Libbey @ University of Toledo (2/6)
Celina @ Ottawa-Glandorf (2/6)
Clear Fork @ Loudonville (2/6)

Lima Senior stays on top in D1 despite overtime loss to Springfield South.  Look for Toledo St. John's to make their move with the return of Zach Hillesland from a knee injury.  Ottawa-Glandorf retains their lead in D2 after knocking off previously undefeated D1 Clayton Northmont from the Dayton area.  Archbold replaces Liberty-Benton at the top of D3 after the Eagles lose at Ottoville.  Undefeated Arlington stays on top in D4 with Mansfield St. Peter moving into the second spot.

Tournament Update:  The D2 sectional previously scheduled for Lima Senior has been moved to Ohio Northern University in Ada due to congestion created by the construction around Lima Senior.  Tournament drawings for Northwest Ohio are scheduled for Sunday, February 8 with tournament play starting Tuesday, March 2.  The D1 and D2 regional tournaments will again be played at the University of Toledo with the D3 and D4 regionals slated for Bowling Green State University.  More tournament tidbits next week.

The leaders in all four classes remained the same even though D2 Ottawa-Glandorf and D3 Liberty-Benton each lost for the first time.  Willard and Port Clinton also experienced losses leaving Wauseon and Arlington as the only undefeated teams in NW Ohio.  Arlington solidified its lead in D4 with a win over L-B.

The tournament draw is less than a month away, and there is a good chance that the sectional scheduled for Lima Senior will be moved.  With all the construction at the site, parking would be a nightmare.  That sectional could be moved to the new gymnasium at Lima Central Catholic.  Regardless of where they play, that will be an outstanding sectional with O-G, Van Wert, Shawnee, St. Marys and Elida.
